Outstanding Alumna — Catherine Daniels ’50

Catherine Daniels was born in Sheldon, Iowa. It was here that she began her school career. She attended high school at St. Angela Academy in Carroll, Iowa.

After graduation, her interests turned toward nursing. Daniels entered training at Rock Island, Ill., where she completed her studies for the nursing profession. After two years of general nursing experience, she decided to specialize in anesthesia. She then entered training again in Chicago, which led to certification in anesthesia.

After completing her work in Chicago, Daniels came to St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, where she remained for eight years. It was during her stay at St. Francis that she became interested in working toward a college degree. She attended classes part time and then, later, took a leave of absence from her work in anesthesia in order to finish her bachelor’s degree in education degree, majoring in English and minoring in history and nursing.

Daniels was honored for outstanding service to Viterbo and its alumnae association for the following reasons:

  • First president of Viterbo College Alumnae Association
  • Founder of the “penny-drive” for establishing an alumnae scholarship fund
  • Regular and generous contributor to aforementioned fund and to the annual fund drive of the college
  • Initiator of the Chicago chapter of the Alumnae Association
  • Donor of books to the college library, including a 55-volume set of the world's greatest classics in various fields of learning
  • Charter member of the Viterbo College Board of Advisors
