Alcohol and Prescription Drugs, Medication Disposal Options

Medications are important in treating many conditions and diseases, but when they are no longer needed, it is important to dispose of them properly to help reduce harm from accidental exposure or intentional misuse. Medications that are no longer being used, or expired, need to be disposed of properly. 54.2% of prescription drug users get them free from family and friends. La Crosse has many disposal locations to take your medications. The Medication Drop Boxes that are located closest to Viterbo University, include:

  • Walgreens Pharmacy, 900 West Avenue South. They are open 24 hours/day.
  • La Crosse Police Department, 400 La Crosse Street. Hours are 8:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Gundersen Health System

These locations will only accept pills and patches. They will not take liquids, needles, inhalers, personal care products such as shampoo, sunscreen, soaps, etc. They will not accept any illicit drugs. For students, the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials plant located at 6500 State Road 16 will accept the liquids and inhalers at no cost to students.

Remember to scratch off or use a black marker to remove any identifying information on pill bottles.
