Associate of Science in Education (ASEd)

Overview

Associate of Science in Education is a credential awarded to a student in a Viterbo University education program who satisfies the requirements of the degree as outlined below. With this earned Associate of Science in Education degree, students are eligible to apply for a substitute teaching license in the state of Wisconsin.

Policy

A maximum of 45 credits may be transferred into the program.

Learning Outcomes
  • Ethical Reasoning: Students respond to ethical issues, using informed value systems.
  • Critical Thinking: Students comprehensively explore issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating and opinion or conclusion.
  • Oral Communication and Written Communication: Students speak and write to suit varied purposes, audiences, disciplines, and contexts.
  • Develop foundational professional knowledge of theory and pedagogy appropriate for PK-12 school settings.
  • Describe and apply child development principles in planning lessons for children from PK-12 school settings.
     

Master of Arts with Cross-categorical Special Education (WI 2801)

Overview

Our Cross-categorical Special Education emphasis brings educators from across the state together to learn best practices in the field of special education. Our classes view individuals with disabilities from a strengths-based model, and help educators work toward successful inclusion of individuals with disabilities. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 13 courses (34-37 credit hours).

Online delivery:

  • 15-credits of core coursework (6 courses)
  • 19-21 credits of coursework specific to the Cross-categorical Special Education (7 courses)
Policy

Admissions

Admission Requirements for all Graduate Programs in Education (degree, license, endorsement, or certificate) include the following, but may include additional program-specific admission requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA for 12 graduate credits from an accredited institution in order to be admitted in good standing
  • Earned teaching or administrative license

All requirements for any graduate program in education must be completed within seven years from the date of application to the graduate program. Coursework must have been taken within the last seven years from the date of application to be applied to program requirements, with the exception of Iowa Educational Leadership programs which is limited to five years.

A student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to complete any graduate program in education and a grade of C or higher earned in all Viterbo University coursework.

Proseminar

In order to attend EDUC 604 Proseminar and engage in commencement ceremonies, students must have completed all required courses in their program of study. Proseminar is the culminating course in the MAE program; it is offered on campus each summer only. Proseminar provides students with the opportunity to present their research and to participate in commencement ceremonies. Degrees are conferred in August after successful completion of all required coursework including EDUC 604 Proseminar.

Registration

Students must apply online and be accepted into the program of their choice before registering for courses. Students will be assisted by their advisor/program specialist when registering for the first semester. In all subsequent semesters, the student will register online in VitNet/Student Planning.

Transfer Credit
Master of Arts in Education and Educational Leadership
Upon acceptance, student may transfer up to six credit hours of graduate credit taken within seven years of application date to be applied to the MAE degree program.  Up to six credit hours taken within seven years of application may be considered for the Wisconsin Educational Leadership program for equivalent graduate courses. Up to six semester credit hours taken within five years of application may be considered for the Iowa Educational Leadership program for equivalent graduate courses.

  • Leadership: Apply quality principles of teacher leadership - including the skills of effective communication, collaboration, and motivation to shape, change, and improve student learning.
  • Synthesis: Integrate opportunities to grow professionally and actively participate in the educational community of which they are a part.        
  • Ethics: Integrate historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education into their educational practices.  
  • Pedagogy: Demonstrate the ability to provide different approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are equitable, based on developmental needs of students, and that are adapted to the diverse needs of students.  
  • Assess: Integrate student achievement data, local, state, and national standards, and district initiatives into plans for instruction.        
     

Master of Arts in Education with Create Your Own Emphasis (Iowa)

Overview

Our Master of Arts in Education (Generalist) allows you to create your own path, enabling you to grow in areas that support your personal and professional development. Electives can be selected from the various licensure and certificate programs, and the two additional courses from the MA core. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 10 courses (30-credit hours).

  • 15-credits of core coursework (6 courses) - online
  • Minimum of 15-credits of elective coursework - online

Art (Track)

Overview

Art is a timeless means of communicating human experiences. Artistic, creative abilities help move our civilization forward.

When you choose the art emphasis at Viterbo, you will learn what it means to recognize and create sound works of art and to understand the art forms of cultures throughout history.

You will be provided with meaningful study and practice in artistic methods, techniques, and media, embedded with intellectual inquiry and critical analysis. Explore questions such as:

  • How do I generate ideas and discern their strength?
  • How do I turn my ideas into strong, original art forms?
  • How do I craft them with my hands?
  • How might I use art and my creative abilities to serve my community?

The art emphasis consists of courses in studio art and art history. Studio courses are offered in:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Ceramics
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Graphic design

History (Track)

Overview

Our history emphasis will prepare you with a wealth of knowledge—both past and present—and encourage curiosity and mindfulness of the events that have shaped civilization around the world. You will learn to connect ideas across cultures, which will serve you well in your education and career. Studying history grants you a unique opportunity to supplement your skills in written and oral communication, while also learning to be an informed citizen of the world.

Ethics, Culture, and Society (BS)

Overview

Viterbo’s interdisciplinary program combines courses from at least two academic disciplines, including history, philosophy, and art. Our program emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and community engagement.

Personal choice will drive your pathway, with interdisciplinary studies focused on perspectives and creativity applied to real-world issues in the La Crosse community and beyond. Course-embedded assignments are connected to the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership series of speakers and annual conference.

Policy

All majors are required to take a minimum of 12 credits in one discipline and nine credits in another, unrelated discipline. One of these disciplines must be in the Liberal Arts (art, history, literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and natural sciences). All majors are encouraged to take more than the minimum requirements. For transfer students/students changing majors: No substitutions for ECAS-220/320 or ECAS-400. Credits for former major shift to a minor.

Addendum

Ethics, Culture, and Society (transfer agreement) Major (Bachelor of Science)

Students with an earned AAS degree in legal studies/paralegal from Western Technical College may earn a Bachelor of Science with a major in ethics, culture, and society. The degree must have been earned May 2016 or later.  Students may not begin this program or be considered a student in this program until the AAS degree has been completed and documented on a transcript. The student cannot be dually enrolled. The AAS degree must be completed prior to transfer to Viterbo. Students must fulfill all requirements for the Core Curriculum, mission seminars, major requirements, Bachelor of Science requirements and final degree requirements. Transfer courses and waivers and/or substitutions could modify the credit total in the core curriculum and major.

Pre-Chiropractic

Overview

A chiropractor focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.

Addendum

Viterbo University offers pre-health advising programs with majors in biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience. These three majors have been determined to best satisfy the pre-health professional admission requirements of most professional schools in a four-year major curriculum.
