Like Other Teachers, Semb Learning Lessons from Pandemic

Carter Semb ’18, ’20 learned a lot about being a teacher at Viterbo University, first getting his undergraduate degree and then this summer completing work on his master’s degree in education. Even with all he’s learned, he gained some unexpected lessons about teaching this year, thanks to COVID-19.

Nikki Miller is a proud 22-year veteran of law enforcement. After graduating from Viterbo in 1998, Miller began working at the La Crosse County Juvenile Detention Facility. She later transferred to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office in 2001 and began working as a jailer.

Nikki Beyer '15 did a 13-week stint last spring at Elmhurst Hospital, a city-run facility treating only patients with COVID-19 when she started. When she got done with a 12-hour shift at the hospital in Queens, she'd go back to Manhattan, where she took the stairs to her fourth floor apartment, reminding her of her days at Bonaventure Hall.
