LA CROSSE, Wis. – Celebrate the bonds of sisterhood, the power of imagination, and the strength it takes to follow your dreams as the Viterbo University Conservatory for the Performing Arts presents Little Women: The Broadway Musical Thursday, April 23–Sunday, April 26 in the Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel, Little Women: The Broadway Musical is the story of the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, and their mother Marmee as they navigate life in Concord, Massachusetts during the time of the Civil War.
“This is musical theatre at its finest—daring, passionate, bold, fun, but also heartwarming and sentimental,” said Viterbo faculty member James Stabp, the director of the production. “This story couldn’t be more relevant to today and our society. It’s about connection and family, and how four sisters weave through girlhood fueling each other to live their dreams and reckon with the societal pressures of tradition.”
In addition to the story, audiences will also enjoy the production’s great music, Stabp said.
“I think of this as a contemporary score built on the foundation of true golden age musical theatre,” he said. “It’s grand and epic, fun and poignant. The sweeping ballads and folk-driven dance will make audiences want to jump on stage and join in.”
Little Women stars Viterbo students Ethan Blakeney, Ashlyn Cox, Sydney Ellis, Braeden Jackson, Vee Jacobson, Issy Lambert, Zachary Lichner, Natalynn McNabb, Faye Muma, and Aidan Reilly.
“I feel extremely lucky and grateful to have been a small part of this process and watch them grow, trust themselves, and lean on each other through the process. The cast is a true community.”
Little Women is recommended for ages 8 and older. It is a family-friendly musical with heartfelt themes suitable for children with an interest in drama and music.
Book is by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. Little Women is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com.
