LA CROSSE, Wis. – Explore the timeless battle between personal conviction and the power of the state as the Viterbo University Conservatory for the Performing Arts presents the classic Greek tragedy Antigone Thursday, Nov. 20–Sunday, Nov. 23 in the Weber Center for the Performing Arts Lyche Theatre.
“The Athenian tragedies are stories we continue to tell in different ways as they are foundational stories to who we are as a people,” said Benjamin Gonzlaes, the Viterbo faculty member directing the production. “Civil disobedience, duty, morality, and courage are all themes we can very much relate to as part of our history and are still relevant today.”
Antigone is a gripping play written by Sophocles in approximately 440 BC. It was given a modern translation by Robert Fagles in the early 1980s, which will be used in this Viterbo Conservatory for the Performing Arts production.
“I’ve been doing this for a very long time and have seen my share of Greek theatre, but I’ve always been enamored by Antigone,” Gonzales said. “I haven’t seen anything like the way we’re telling the story. We have a fantastic cast who were ready to go on day one, and we use modern storytelling amenities that will very much appeal to the audience. I think our production will be something unique and special.”
This production stars Viterbo students Malia Meyer as Antigone, Sydney Ellis as Ismene, Samuel Asid as Creon, Thomas Rise as Haemon, Ayawyn Conner as Tiresias, Haily Fernandes as Eurydice, Carley Clover as the Chorus Leader and Nyx, Alanna Sawall as the Messenger, Connie Buhl as the Sentry, and Lanie Brown, Vee Jacobson, and Jame Allen as members of the chorus and understudies.
“They’re an amazingly talented group,” Gonzales said.
Antigone is recommended for audience members ages 13 and older, for mature themes of justice, civil disobedience, and death. It is best suited for middle school students and up with contextual understanding.
