Combining the sciences, working with his hands, and helping others—all things important to him in a future profession—Gabe Holderby has found dentistry to be the ideal career choice.
“The results of a career aptitude test in seventh grade also stated I should be a dentist,” he laughed.
Holderby graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in ethics from Viterbo University May 9. He will pursue a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine beginning in July. His eventual goal is to open his own practice where he will “serve others through compassionate, high-quality care.”
A native of Normal, Ill., Holderby discovered Viterbo when he was recruited by the university’s track and field coaches. After visiting and learning more about the science and pre-dentistry program, he chose to enroll because he felt Viterbo would help him become an excellent candidate for dental school. He knew very early on that he made the right choice.
“In October of my freshman year I came down with mono and COVID and was sick for a long time,” he said. “My professors reached out to check on me and offer support before I had a chance to contact them.”
Holderby also appreciated the fact that he could sit down with biology professor Dr. Chris Mayne to find out what he needed to do to over the course of his undergraduate career to make himself the best possible candidate for dental school.
“Ultimately, Viterbo has the resources and support to help you be successful in anything you want to do,” Holderby said. “It’s all here at your disposal.”
Viterbo will always be even more special to Holderby because it is the place he met his soon-to-be wife, December 2025 nursing graduate and Mayo Clinic Health System RN Madelyn Andreae.
“We’re getting married July 25, four days before I start dental school,” he said.
