Lilly Aleckson, Biochemistry Major

Hometown: East Troy, Wisconsin

Major: Biochemistry, Spanish Minor

Year: Class of 2027

Advice for New Students: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and try new things! College is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone, you’ll learn so much about yourself and try to make the most of your experience.

Favorite Place in La Crosse: In La Crosse, NOM is my go-to for acai bowls, and I love wandering around Pearl Street (even though it's dangerous for my bank account!). There’s something peaceful about walking along the river or just exploring downtown. Also, going on Bluff hikes is super fun when the weather is nice.

On Staying Motivated: I’m motivated by growth. I love learning, pushing myself, and seeing how far I can go when I’m fully committed, whether it’s in a leadership role, academics, or stepping out of my comfort zone. I want to be the best version of myself and keep evolving, both personally and professionally.

More about Lily

“I’ve always been drawn to science and interested in a career in healthcare, but I also knew I wanted to serve people in a deeper, more personal way. That’s why I chose to add a Spanish minor. Being bilingual can help me connect with more people, especially in medical settings where communication matters most.

I’m involved in several things at Viterbo that I genuinely love. I’m on the Honors Exploring Leadership team and serve on the Honors Leadership Board. I’m also a tutor, a member of STEM Club, the College of Engineering, Letters, and Sciences senator for Student Government Association, and the new social media ambassador for El Sol, Viterbo’s Spanish-language publication.

When I visited campus, what stood out to me was the sense of community. The way people greeted each other, the professors who already seemed to know students by name and it felt so genuine. Events like the President’s Dinner, Courtyard Carni, and late-night breakfast during finals showed me how much Viterbo values building a supportive campus culture. That energy made my decision easy.

One of my favorite memories so far was the Honors Retreat last fall. It gave me time to reflect on the kind of leader I want to be while also bonding with other students in my cohort. I left that weekend feeling more grounded, more connected and more excited for what’s ahead.

If I had to describe Viterbo in three words, I’d say: caring, supportive and compassionate. The faculty here doesn’t just care about you as a student. They care about your growth as a whole person. They’re truly invested in your future and want you to succeed in every way.

To anyone new to Viterbo or thinking about joining, I’d say: ask questions, try new things and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. College is a time of discovery, and this is a place that will support you through every step of that journey.”
