LA CROSSE, Wis. – The classic American Western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance will be the subject of the next Civics and Cinema event at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Rivoli Theatre and Pizzeria in La Crosse.
Released in 1962 and starring James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, and Lee Marvin, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance explores the theme of myth and legends. It was also praised for its depiction of a free press, town meetings, statehood debates, and the influence of education in frontier America. The film was directed by John Ford.
The U.S. Library of Congress designated The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The Civics and Cinema program is devoted to sharing classic movies, bringing the community together, and fostering civic conversations. Sam Scinta of Rebuilding American Civics and Rick Kyte of the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership at Viterbo University will give a brief introduction to the film and will lead a conversation following the screening.

Advance tickets are required and can be purchased at https://www.rivoli.net. The cost is $5, with all proceeds donated to the La Crosse Community Foundation.
