It’s not often easy for students to attend college more than 4,000 miles away from their homes and families. Viterbo University biology student and men’s soccer player Sebastian Ortiz found a unique solution.
“I made another family on the team,” said Ortiz, a native of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, and one of many Viterbo men’s soccer players from outside the 50 States. “I’ve gotten to know people and experience different cultures from around the world. It’s interesting and fun. I love being on the team.”
Ortiz even hosted three of his teammates at his parent’s home in Puerto Rico and looks forward to planned visits to their countries. The great friendships he’s made through athletics is the best of the many highlights of his time at Viterbo, which also include his academic pursuits and participating in STEM Club, Pre-dental Club, and the Student Government Association.
Having never heard of Viterbo before he was recruited to play soccer, Ortiz did some research and liked the university’s outstanding science facilities and small class sizes. He is very happy with his decision to become a V-Hawk.
Now between his sophomore and junior years, Ortiz is staying in La Crosse for the summer and working for the Viterbo IIT department. The job came about through the “familial” connection with team chaplain and Viterbo IIT employee Chad Gilbeck. Ortiz assists with cybersecurity issues such as suspicious logins, emails in closed accounts, computer set up around campus, “pointing people in the right direction” to receive help with specific questions, and other duties.
After graduating from Viterbo, Ortiz plans to attend orthodontics school at the University of Puerto Rico or Ponce Health Sciences University, both located on his home island.
“There is a need for doctors and dentists in Puerto Rico, and I want to make a contribution,” he said.
