LA CROSSE, Wis. – Members of the public are invited to receive a free voice health and function checkup at Viterbo University’s Nursing Center on Tuesdays, Oct. 28, Nov. 18, and Dec. 2.

The screenings will be conducted by graduate level Speech and Language Pathology (MS-SLP) students under the leadership and supervision of Viterbo faculty members, including Dr. Theodora Nestorova and Dr. Edwin Overholt.

Performed with the use of a flexible naso-pharyngo-laryngoscopy (FNPL), the minimally-invasive screenings will cover general vocal health and will detect allergies, reflux, and potentially more serious problems such as nodules and other lesions. Participants will be referred for medical treatment in the case of any issues or incidental findings.

“There are often long wait times to see a specialist at traditional medical providers, so we are happy to offer this unique service,” Nestorova said. “This is a safe, quick, and fascinating way for participants to see their vocal folds in action, and it is great practical and clinically relevant experience for our students.”

Anyone interested in a free voice health and function screening should fill out the form available at https://www.viterbo.edu/communication-disorders-department. Participants will then be contacted to schedule. Most screenings will take place from 11:30 a.m.–1:50 p.m. during the Voice and Resonance Disorders course, but some later afternoon and early evening times on other days during week of the screenings will also be available to accommodate more people.

The screenings are recommended for adults and youth age 10 or older and should not take longer than 15 minutes. People who have experienced any unusual symptoms such changes in voice quality, weakness, or fatigue are especially encouraged to get a screening.

Screenings for swallowing disorders will be offered in the spring.
