DR. STANGELOVE FEATURED FILM OF CIVICS AND CINEMA PROGRAM JUNE 10

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Dr. Stangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb will be the subject of the next Civics and Cinema event at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at the Rivoli Theatre and Pizzeria in downtown La Crosse.

The Civics and Cinema program is devoted to sharing classic movies, bringing the community together, and fostering civic conversations. Sam Scinta of Rebuilding American Civics and Rick Kyte of the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership at Viterbo University will give a brief introduction to the film and will lead a conversation following the screening.

Released in 1964, Dr. Strangelove is a black comedy and political satire directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for star Peter Sellers, who played three roles. It was twice named one of the 50 best films of all time by the American Film Institute. The film is loosely based on the novel Red Alert by Peter George, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kubrick and Terry Southern.

The plot of Dr. Strangelove follows an insane U.S. Air Force general’s order to launch a hydrogen bomb attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to global nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.

Civics and Cinema is sponsored by the Rivioli Theater and Pizzeria, Rebuilding American Civics, and the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership at Viterbo University.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Advance tickets are required and can be purchased at https://www.rivoli.net. The cost is $5, with all proceeds donated to the La Crosse Community Foundation.
