Positive he wanted to become an optometrist, Luke Bussiere enrolled as a human biology major and chemistry minor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Great experiences in his microbiology and anatomy and physiology classes and research opportunities with an outstanding faculty member made him rethink his career choice, however.
Fortunately for his future students, Bussiere’s new chosen profession was education. He went on to earn a PhD in microbiology from Iowa State University and today is an assistant professor of biology and the new chair of the biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience department at Viterbo University.
“I very much like teaching, and the aspect I enjoy the most is the mentoring opportunities I have with students one on one,” said Bussiere, whose area of expertise is virology. “And teaching is mentoring, but on a larger scale in a class of 20 or 30 students. It’s not uncommon to have students in several classes over the years and you can really build relationships with them. When they come to my office with questions about the class material or their next steps in life, it’s very rewarding.”
Bussiere teaches the courses microbiology for health professionals, general biology, general microbiology, and the laboratory portion of the class molecular and cellular basis of life. He also serves as faculty mentor for the university’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program.
“Research experience is very important for a well-rounded education and for students going on to graduate school,” he said. “It also allows the students to be challenged and practice their critical thinking skills.”
Off campus, Bussiere enjoys playing tennis, working on home improvement projects, and spending time with his wife and their two young children and puppy. He also likes playing cards and board games.
“I’m excited to move into the department chair position and continue building our minors while supporting the growth and new opportunities that our upcoming physician’s associate program will bring to students and the department.” he said. “I’m also working on ways to improve our campus tour experience to help recruitment.”
