Online Certificate in
Servant Leadership for Athletic Coaches

Coaches have a profound, lasting influence on students both on and off the field. They may not recognize the importance of leadership skills and rely on their own experiences with traditional coaching methods — this influence can help or harm the development of the athlete. Coaching today has a stronger emphasis on developing the whole person, and it is our goal to help coaches better support the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of athletes.
Servant leadership is a leadership style in which a leader’s primary focus is on serving and meeting the needs of others. Servant leadership behaviors have been shown to empower others, enhance team morale, build trust, and develop future leaders. It has been demonstrated that coaches who have strong servant leadership skills and behaviors have a stronger, more positive relationship with their athletes.
This program will provide training specifically tailored for coaches and athletic directors on the fundamentals of servant leadership and coaching. The program will emphasize the holistic development of athletes and create a platform for coaches to further understand their role in students' lives.
Who should attend?
Individuals and coaches who work closely with athletes of all ages and skill levels.
Logistics
This certificate program is comprised of five modules and will include lecture/learning videos, articles, discussion forums, journaling, and a coaching toolkit.
There will be an optional virtual meeting every Wednesday from 7:00 - 8:00 pm CST via Zoom with required Zoom meetings the first and last week of the program. The time commitment for program completion is 2-3 hours per week.
Program Fee
The total cost for the Certificate program is $199 which includes online access to Viterbo's online learning platform, Moodle, as well as all course materials.

Terresa Bubbers, DBA - Assistant Professor of Business and Servant Leadership in the Dahl School of Business
Terresa Bubbers is an assistant professor with over 25 years of extensive management and leadership experience in both health care and business sectors. Dr. Bubbers' strong understanding of organizational dynamics stems from hands-on experience in health care and as a business owner, along with academic and research experience in the field. Recognizing the pivotal role of effective conflict resolution in both business and academia, Dr. Bubbers is a certified expert in conflict management. The qualification demonstrates her commitment to fostering positive and productive working environments. Dr. Bubbers has a strong passion for athletics and leadership. This unique blend of interests enables her to connect the dynamics of sports and effective leadership strategies, offering a holistic perspective.
Tom Thibodeau, MA - Distinguished Professor of Servant Leadership
Thomas Thibodeau is the Distinguished Professor of Servant Leadership at Viterbo University where he has been teaching for 39 years. Tom is the founder of the master's degree in Servant leadership at Viterbo, the first and only master's degree of its kind in the nation. He is a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, active community member and part owner of a country tavern. Thibodeau speaks and consults regionally and nationally on the Positive Power of Servant Leadership.
