Galapagos Islands, Ecuador (January 2–11, 2027)
VUSM 386: Environmental Justice
Program Overview:
Are you passionate about the animal world, environmental justice, sustainability, and responsible tourism? If so, this program is perfect for you.
This faculty-led trip takes you to Quito, Ecuador’s capital, where you will visit the Franciscan Basilica Monastery and enjoy a guided city tour. You will then spend several days in the Tandayapa Bellavista Cloud Forest, hiking through its 1,000-acre reserve, a recognized Private Protected Area known for its biodiversity, including endangered animals and exceptional birdwatching opportunities.
Next, you will explore the Galápagos Islands, including San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, and Isabela. San Cristobal Island is unique as one of the few places where three different species of booby birds and the magnificent frigatebird nest in the same area. Santa Cruz Island boasts six distinct vegetation zones and is home to giant tortoises, land and marine iguanas, and a wide variety of birds. On Isabela Island, you will visit the Sierra Negra Volcano, one of the most active volcanic regions on Earth, featuring one of the world’s largest craters and a popular hiking trail.
As part of this experience, you will participate in a panel discussion on how education serves as a catalyst for environmental change.
What makes this trip especially unique is its commitment to sustainability and its limited availability. It is offered only every other year. Join us for this unforgettable journey in January 2027 to discover, learn, and make a difference.
