Program Information

Our Master of Arts in Education is designed to motivate and inspire educators to be transformative agents in today’s educational arena. The core coursework intertwines concepts of servant leadership, social justice, and educational equity, enhancing the educators’ ability to interact with increasingly diverse populations and changing societal demands. Educators have the opportunity to develop an understanding of cutting-edge online instructional techniques and assessment while delving into the critical evaluation of new media literacies.

Our Iowa and National Graduate Programs in Education, including the PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189) and Innovative Teacher Leadership and Instructional Coaching Certificate (National), produce educators who are highly skilled in the art of teaching and leadership. Graduates are student-centered, reflective practitioners who work toward continuous improvement. They base decisions upon their ethical responsibility to ensure a quality education for all students. They advocate for quality educational opportunities for all students.

Master of Arts in Education with Create Your Own Emphasis (Iowa/National)

Our Master of Arts in Education (Generalist) allows you to create your own path, enabling you to grow in areas that support your personal and professional development. Electives can be selected from the various licensure and certificate programs, and the two additional courses from the MA core. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 10 courses (30-credit hours).

  • 15-credits of core coursework (6 courses) - online
  • Minimum of 15-credits of elective coursework - online or blended

PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189)

Our Iowa PK-12 Principal -Supervisor of Special Education 189 is a two-year, six-semester program which requires an internship during each of the six semesters. The internship is conducted onsite with an approved mentor, which is usually the student's principal. This program meets the standards set by the Iowa Department of Education.

  • 24 credits of core principal coursework (8 courses)

  • 6 credits of clinical/internship (6 semesters/courses)

Pair with the Master of Arts in Education, an additional six credits for a total 36 credit hours.

Innovative Teacher Leadership and Instructional Coaching Certificate (Iowa/National)

This online certificate is an interdisciplinary program ideal for instructors from academic to business settings, teaching traditional and nontraditional students. The curriculum focuses on adult learning theory and is designed to increase instructor capacity to improve universal instruction and foster interpersonal relationships. Evidenced-based practices combine with adult learning strategies to create environments where student engagement and achievement thrive. Servant leadership, social justice, and working for the common good are intertwined throughout the curriculum. The Innovative Teacher Leadership and Instructional Coaching certificate is designed as an enhanced learning opportunity, it will not lead to an Iowa Endorsement or License.

10-credit certificate (4 courses) - fully online

Pair with the Master of Arts in Education, an additional six credits for a total 31 credit hours.

  •  6 credits of core master's coursework (two courses) - online with one four-day residency in La Crosse, WI culminating with commencement

Master of Arts in Education with PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189)

This Master of Arts in Education prepares educators to become school leaders following the standards set by the Iowa Department of Education. When PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189) is chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 17 courses (36-credit hours).

  • 24-credits core coursework (8 courses)

  • 6-credits clinical/internship (6 courses)

  • 6-credits (electives or Curriculum Leadership emphasis)
