Styck Myhre remembers the 2024 Viterbo Health Science Scholarship competition as a big day complete with an exam, an interview, meeting faculty and fellow students, and learning more about Viterbo University.

“It was intense, but a good intense,” said Myhre of the event. “It felt like the best thing ever when they announced my name for second place. Any scholarship helps, and I had worked hard and had been rewarded. I was extremely amped up.”

Myhre was awarded a $12,000 scholarship over four years and today is a sophomore biology major with the goal of becoming a pediatric surgeon.

“I always knew I wanted to do something medical related, and a high school career class really piqued by interest in the field,” said Myhre, who comes from Caledonia, MN. “Surgery has always been so fascinating to me. The fact that we can go into a body and fix it is super amazing.”

Working at a daycare through high school led to Myhre’s focus on pediatrics. Seeing sick kids “hurt the soul” and he has wanted to help children ever since.

In addition to the scholarship funds, Myhre chose Viterbo because of the quality of its pre-med program and the close campus community. He is also a member of the men’s volleyball team.

“It’s been great at Viterbo so far,” Myhre said. “I’ve really been able to succeed with the support of my professors who all see that I have the resources I need when I’m not in the classroom because of the team’s travel schedule.”

Myhre is also involved in STEM Club, has served as an Orientation Leader, and enjoys the many hiking trails of the La Crosse bluffs. Academics and volleyball remain his focus.

“I have many close friends on the volleyball team,” he said. “We spend so much time together, and they are another great group of people who are always there rooting for you and wanting you to succeed.”
