Traditional Catholic Prayers

Sign of the Cross

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,  now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Canticle of Creation

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord,
Yours are the praises, the glory, and the honor, and all blessing
To You alone, Most High, do they belong,
and no human is worthy to mention Your name.
Praised be You, my Lord, with all Your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day and through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor;
and bears a likeness of You, Most High One.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon, and the stars,
in heaven You formed them clear and precious and beautiful.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Wind,
and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather,
through whom You give sustenance to Your creatures.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water,
who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night,
and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.
Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth,
who sustains and governs us,
and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.

Praised be You, my Lord, through those who give pardon for Your love,
and bear infirmity and tribulation.
Blessed are those who endure in peace
for by You, Most High, shall they be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death,
from whom no one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin.
Blessed are those whom death will find in Your most holy will,
for the second death shall do them no harm.

Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks
and serve Him with great humility.

Prayer of St. Clare

Place your mind before the mirror of eternity!
Place your soul in the brilliance of glory!
Place your heart in the figure of divine substance!
And transform your entire being into the image of the Godhead
Itself through contemplation.

Most high,
glorious God,
enlighten the darkness
of my heart, and give me, Lord
a correct faith,
a certain hope,
a perfect charity,
sense and knowledge,
so that I may carry out
Your holy and true command.

St. Clare's Second Letter to Agnes

What you hold, may you always hold.
What you do, may you always do and never abandon.
But with swift pace, light step,
and unswerving feet,
so that even your steps stir up no dust,
go forward
securely, joyfully, swiftly,
on the path of prudent happiness,
believing nothing
which would dissuade you from this resolution
or which would place a stumbling block for you on the way,
so that you may offer your vows to the Most High
in the pursuit of that perfection
to which the Spirit of the Lord has called you.

Various Christian Prayers

Prayer Before a Meeting

Loving and gracious God,
we come to you today asking for your guidance, wisdom, and support as we begin this meeting.
Help us to engage in meaningful discussion; allow us to grow closer as a group and nurture the bonds of community.
Fill us with your grace, Lord God, as we make decisions that might affect the students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends of Viterbo University.
And continue to remind us that all that we do here today, all that we accomplish, is for the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of You, and for the service of humanity.
We ask these things in your name,
Amen.

Grace Before Meals

For food in a world where many walk in hunger;
for faith in a world where many walk in fear;
for friends in a world where many walk alone, we give you humble thanks, O Lord.
Amen.

Prayer Attributed to Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Make us worthy, Lord,
to serve others throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger.
Give them through our hands this day their daily bread,
and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.
Amen.

Fall In Love (Pedro Arrupe, S.J.)

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than
falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.
What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.

Prayers From Other Religious Traditions

Shema (Judaism)

Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.
Blessed be the name of his glorious majesty forever and ever.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your children,
and you shall speak them when you are sitting at home and when you go on a journey, when you lie down and when you rise up.
You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.
You shall inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Selection From the Qur'an (Islam)

In the name of God, the compassionate,
the merciful, praise God, Lord of the worlds,
the compassionate, the merciful, master of the day of judgment.
You it is we worship; you it is to whom we turn for aid.
Guide us along the right path,
the path of those whom you have blessed,
not those who have drawn your anger,
nor those who have lost their way.

To the Great Spirit (Lakota)

Grandfather Great Spirit,
all over the world the faces of living ones are alike.
With tenderness they have come up out of the ground.
Look upon your children that they may
face the winds and walk the good road to the Day of Quiet.
Grandfather Great Spirit, fill us with the Light.
Give us the strength to understand,
and the eyes to see.
Teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that live.

Lao-Tsu's Balance Prayer

Lord, let us empty of all doctrines,
The Tao is wisdom eternally inexhaustible.
Fathomless for the mere intellect,
The Tao is the law wherewith all things come into being.

It blunts the edges of the intellect,
Untangles the knots of the mind,
Softens the glare of thinking,
And settles the dust of thought.

Transparent yet invisible,
The Tao exists like deep pellucid water.
Its origin is unknown,
For it existed before Heaven and Earth
