3/29/22 Safety Alert - Motor Vehicle Theft and Entry
Viterbo University is releasing the information below to help community members make informed decisions regarding their safety as required by the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
Over the past 24 hours, there have been two reports (one on 3/28/22 and one on 3/29/22) of unauthorized entry into motor vehicles owned by Viterbo employees, including one motor vehicle theft. On Monday afternoon, Campus Safety and Security received a report that a vehicle was stolen from Lot M (Reinhart Center). This afternoon (3/29/22), Campus Safety and Security received a second report indicating that another motor vehicle owned by a Viterbo employee had been entered without permission. Both incidents occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Monday 3/28/22. Initial evidence suggests that the two incidents may have been perpetrated by the same individual. The investigation is ongoing; if you have information regarding either of these or other potentially related incidents, please contact Viterbo Campus Safety and Security at (608)-796-3911 or 608-780-1582 or the La Crosse Police Department at 608-782-7575.
If further information regarding the investigation becomes available, Campus Safety and Security will share it via the university safety alerts web site.
Everyone is reminded to take the following safety measures:
- Many motor vehicle thefts are crimes of opportunity. Leaving the keys in your vehicle (even a "hidden" spare key) greatly increases your chances of having your vehicle stolen.
- Close your windows and lock your doors whenever you leave your car, regardless of how long you plan to be gone.
- Park in well‐lit areas.
- Remove valuables and packages from your vehicle whenever possible or place them out of sight.
- Immediately report any suspicious activity on campus to Campus Safety at 608-796-3911 or the La Crosse Police Department at 911.
