Overview

The educational doctorate degree in counselor education and supervision program at Viterbo University is intended to prepare graduates to work as counselors, educators, supervisors, and program leaders. With an integrative behavioral health care focus, the doctoral program in counselor education and supervision seeks to meet the growing need for highly qualified counselor leaders—advanced counseling practitioners, educators, and supervisors.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Viterbo University Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Viterbo University is intended to prepare graduates to work as advanced practitioners, educators, supervisors, and program leaders in a diverse society. The doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision seeks to meet the growing need for highly qualified counselor leaders and scholars who will be able to integrate mental health services in a variety of settings. The program educates counselor educators and supervisors who will integrate the values of contemplation, integrity, hospitality, stewardship, and service into their personal and professional lives.

Distinct Curricular Themes

The program interfaces with the mission of the university emphasizing the values of contemplation, integrity, hospitality, stewardship, and service into their personal and professional lives. As such, active learning through service delivery and research is emphasized as well as an integration of the following curricular themes: 

  • A counselor education curriculum that exceeds national and state standards by requiring core coursework in advanced clinical practices, supervision, trauma and crisis response, ethical and legal issues, advocacy and social justice, and counselor education specific to counselor training, program development, assessment, and outcome evaluation.
  • A multicultural emphasis on leadership and supervision encouraging a multicultural counselor identity that seeks an appreciation of diversity and human growth in relation to social dynamics while also advocating for community justice and equity. This emphasis is concurrent with an emphasis on systemic leadership, and supervisory skills needed to assist with organizational change and transformation.
  • A research model that emphasizes not only the rigor of quantitative and qualitative methodologies consistent with doctoral level inquiry, but also program evaluation procedures and outcome driven decision making related to best practices.
  • A competency-based program where adult learners are invited into collaborative learning experiences and placed into the roles of counselor educators, supervisors, and systemic leaders.
  • A focus on integrative behavioral health care emphasizing the skills, knowledge, and competencies required for integrating mental health services within primary health care settings.

Delivery

Within a collaborative cohort model students will take courses in sequence throughout the three to four-year program consisting of approximately nine credits per semester. This unique learning experience provides doctoral students early experiential learning with a continuous integration of theory and practice. The program entails a systemic approach to knowledge and skill acquisition.
