Inclement Weather Plan

Viterbo University implements its Inclement Weather Plan when conditions create significant travel or safety risks for students, employees, and visitors. During periods of deteriorating weather, in-person classes and other campus activities will continue as scheduled unless the University issues an official notice of either Remote Learning or Closure for the main campus in La Crosse.

Official Notice

Any official change to University classes, activities, or operations will be communicated through one or more of the following channels.

  • University home pageFacebook, and Instagram
  • University email to all employees, faculty, and students
  • Local news, radio, and television outlets

Remote Learning

When Remote Learning is announced:

  • Faculty - will notify students of the remote learning activities or assignments to be completed for that day. No in-person classes will be held.
  • Campus facilities, offices, and operations - open as normal.
  • Scheduled events - cancelled. These include (but are not limited to) fine arts rehearsals and performances, athletic practices and competitions, student organizations and activities, public lectures and programming, and San Damiano Chapel services.

  • Student Teachers - follow the schedule of the cooperating school.

  • Student Interns - use judgment whether to report to the internship site. Interns are responsible for communicating directly with their site supervisor.

  • Clinical Experiences - because clinicals and travel to sites may begin prior to other University functions, the relevant College Dean will make a cancellation decision by 10 p.m. the evening prior, based on weather predictions. It is possible that clinical experiences are cancelled but in-person classes and other campus activities still occur.

  • Employees - staff and administrators will report to campus as scheduled normal unless remote work, adjusted hours, or use of vacation time is approved by the supervisor.

Closure

Under rare and extreme weather circumstances, the University may close campus buildings/offices to students, employees, and the public due. When Closure is announced:

  • Remote Learning - proceeds as described above.
  • University events and activities - cancelled.
  • Student teaching, internships, and clinicals - follow guidance under Remote Learning.
  • Student facilities - residence halls, dining hall, and Mathy Center will be open (hours may be adjusted, as posted).
  • Campus buildings - all other campus buildings and offices will be closed.
  • Employees - only Essential Support Service Personnel (as designated by Cabinet and relevant supervisors) will report to work. All other employees will not report to campus but will be paid for their scheduled hours - remote work is encouraged, where possible.
