La Crosse, Wis. – Viterbo University today announced the launch of The Viterbo Track, a new guided program designed to help students who are undecided about their major explore their interests, discover their strengths, and build clarity around their academic and career direction while staying on track for graduation.
Research shows that more than half of first-year college students enter higher education without a declared major or change their major at least once during their college journey. The Viterbo Track provides intentional support, tools, and experiences to make that exploration purposeful and confidence-building.
“The Viterbo Track offers students flexibility without sacrificing academic momentum,” said Alyssa Gostonczik, director of The HUB for Student Success, who will be among the staff supporting students as they work toward declaring a major. “Viterbo has a strong track record of providing active learning experiences that lead to meaningful careers. This program formalizes that approach so students and families can feel confident that even if a major is not declared at the start, there is a clear plan to build direction, stay on track, and graduate on time. Through The Viterbo Track, students gain insight into their strengths and interests while creating a plan aligned with their goals for a fulfilling future.”
What Students Can Expect
The Viterbo Track offers a mix of assessments, hands-on experiences, and personalized guidance. Highlights include:
- Strengths and Interest Assessments such as CliftonStrengths® with a Gallup-Certified coach and the PathwayU career assessment.
- Experiential Learning Opportunities including class assignments in UNST 110, job shadow experiences, volunteering, alumni networking, and participation in student clubs.
- Personal Advising from dedicated academic advisors and engagement with faculty who help students connect their interests to academic paths.
Students in the program have up to two years to explore their options before declaring a major, ensuring they stay on track for on-time graduation while gaining clarity about their academic direction.
Student-Centered Support
The Viterbo Track also includes individualized support from The HUB for Student Success and faculty mentors who partner with students throughout each step of the exploration process. Current students who started as undecided and have utilized the services that will be available through The Viterbo Track report feeling more confident and supported in their decision-making.
“Even though I changed my major a few times, every class taught me something valuable,” said Lillia Chvatal ‘26, who is now a religious studies major. “Viterbo made it easy to explore different paths because my professors truly cared and took time to help me see how my interests connected to possible careers.”
