Dr. Purnell is a well-known international, transcultural nursing consultant and developed the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence, which provides a conceptual framework for the study of culture and an understanding of the continuum of cultural competence in the delivery of health care. The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence is applicable to all health care settings and allows health professionals to conduct holistic assessments of clients from culturally specific population groups. Purnell’s model, which is translated in nine languages, has been used by health care practitioners, educators, administrators, and researchers in countries around the world.
