VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT NEW WORKS FESTIVAL JAN. 25–26, FEB. 1–2

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University theatre and music theatre department will present the inaugural New Works Festivalon Friday, Jan. 25–Saturday, Jan. 26 and Friday, Feb. 1–Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The festival will feature new 10-minute plays, a full-length musical, and a full-length play, never seen before. The selected works were submitted from around the world. The first weekend will consist of wide-ranging 10-minute plays and a performance by Square Wheels, Viterbo’s competitive improv team. The new playCoraby Katherine Varga will be performed Feb. 1 and the new musical The Lost Girlby Arianna Rose and Ben Bonnema will be Feb. 2. Bonnema’s musical The Apple Boys is currently running off-Broadway and Rose is the artistic director and co-founder of Miami New Musicals Theatre Collective.

“The new works come with real substance and inventiveness” said Viterbo faculty member Matt Campbell, the artistic director of the New Works Festival. “This is the first time we’ve done a festival like this at Viterbo. It’s an exceptional educational exercise for our students and it allows audience and artist alike to be a part of something completely new.”

An Artists in Conversation (AIC) discussion with the playwrights will be held following each of the performances the second weekend. Additionally, Bonnema, Rose, and Varga are working with the Viterbo students as guest artists in residence during the week leading up to their new works.
