Research Fellow 2013-14
Assistant Professor, Religious Studies/Philosophy
Emily is assistant professor of religious studies and
philosophy. Prior to her faculty position, Emily served as Campus Minister at
Viterbo University and was charged with music ministry and coordination of
prayer, scripture study, and service trips. Emily completed a B.M. in piano
performance from Viterbo University, a master’s degree in pastoral ministry
from St. Mary’s University, and will complete a doctor of ministry degree in
congregational mission and leadership from Luther Seminary in May 2014. Her
thesis focuses upon on influence of scripture in assisting the laity in their
recognition of vocation and participation in God’s mission. In particular,
Emily studied the influence of an action research intervention using dwelling
in the word in shifting the parish council’s ability to work collaboratively
with the parish priest rather than relying upon the priest for sole directives.
Emily has held numerous professional leadership positions within Catholic
parishes and continues to serve as a music minister and presenter at area
churches. Emily teaches undergraduate courses in liturgy and worship, ritual,
sacraments, scripture, and servant leadership.
Emily’s fellowship research develops
the initial findings of her doctoral thesis by exploring one key insight that
emerged. It was found that numerous respondents felt a lack of belonging and
sought opportunities for further small group engagement. In partnership with
the parish community studied in her doctoral research, Emily will be
implementing small faith sharing groups in a structured format to study the
impact of an action research intervention in this additional setting.
