Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System

The STARS program was develop by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education to recognize the unique mission, challenges, obligations, constraints and opportunities of colleges and universities.  It provides tools for looking at all facets of our institution, with the goals of aiding strategic planning, fostering cross-sector dialogue about sustainability on campus, stimulating conversations and learning between institutions.

The Environmental Responsibility Committee has decided to use the system for assessment and tracking to help provide a framework for sustainability efforts on campus.  At this time the Committee does not recommend doing the self assessment or rating components of this system nor does the Committee recommend registering Viterbo with AASHE.  However, the full STARS program could be adopted in the future.

STARS is made up of four categories:

Education and Research

Planning, Administration and Engagement

These categaories are broken down into subcategories, each with a description of what is required to meet the STARS standards.  Viterbo will attempt to document our sustainability efforts with each subcategory.  Questions and comments should be directed to an ERC committee member.
