Theatre Student Handbook
The Fine Arts Center
The SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS OFFICE is on the fourth floor (room 440) and deals with academic areas. The FINE ARTS CENTER OFFICE and BOX OFFICE are located on the first floor. The Fine Arts Center Office (room 102) oversees the activities of the building. There you may reserve tickets at the Box Office, make arrangements to reserve space for productions or rehearsals, and solve any other problems concerning the building.
FINE ARTS CENTER Facility Policy - All practice, studio, rehearsal, performance, and other spaces within the Fine Arts Center are for educational university purposes and may not be used by students engaging in personal, profit-seeking ventures.
MAIN STAGE is used for Bright Star Season performances and other large theatrical events. As a department we can use the space on a limited basis. All productions and activities in the theatre or in the lobby must be cleared with the department chair and the Fine Arts Center Office.
BLACK BOX THEATRE - This is where we work. This is our lab space. It is the workspace for many classes throughout the year as well as productions. Always be respectful when moving anything around in the Black Box - it may be someone’s project. On the same note, always clean up after working in the Box so someone else may work there. Keep the theatre looking professional. Clean up all paint spills off the floor or seat banks and pick up any garbage that may have gotten into the space after each use.
DANCE STUDIO - Room 122 is on the FAC first floor. This room is used for Viterbo dance classes and rehearsal space. A student may use the studio if it is free from rental use - priority goes to students enrolled in dance classes.
SCENE SHOP is located directly behind the Main Stage. The shop may be used for class projects only when it is not being used for classes or for set construction for a show. However, students must have permission before using any of the shop materials. Access to the shop and tools must be arranged with the technical director. Use of the shop for private projects must be cleared, in advance, by the technical director.
Safety is the first concern for students working in the shop and second is respect for the equipment and the work of others in the shop. Clean-up after each working period is very important as many people use the shop.
COSTUME SHOP is located in the basement of the Fine Arts Center (Room B04). The shop is used for both instruction and construction. You must have permission and instruction before using any machine, iron, etc.
Students in Theatre classes may borrow costumes for class projects with the written permission of the course instructor and approval of the Costume Shop Supervisor after the Supervisor has contacted the course instructor. Costumes needing dry cleaning upon return will be the financial responsibility of the student. Students may pull costumes with permission only. Treat the costumes with the utmost care. Students who abuse this policy (neglect to return to the proper places, damaged property, etc.) will either be charged for damages or will have this privilege revoked.
PROPS AND FURNITURE STORAGE - These rooms are located in the basement of the Fine Arts building. Props and furniture usage is similar to those of the costumes; consent must be granted. All items must be returned to where they belong. (Neither faculty nor work-study hours will be used to clean up piles of returned items from student projects.) Failure to return items, properly check them out, or destruction of items will result in a loss of loaning privileges by the responsible student. All loaned items must be written down.
DRESSING ROOMS are located in the FAC basement directly across from the Costume Shop. When performing in a show, a dressing room space will be assigned to you. You are responsible for keeping the room clean during the run of the show. All costumes must be on hangers each night. Makeup counters, sinks and showers are available for you to use.
