Wisconsin Information

The State of Wisconsin requires all public schools to post job openings.

Jobs are usually posted internally first so if you hear of an opening and do not see it posted on the state website then it may have been taken internally.  When you are looking for work you should check this site DAILY as the rule is that schools must post jobs, but no rule states for how long so you don't want to miss anything.  If you see something that interests you apply right away.  If you wait for two or more weeks the district might start to do interviews while still keeping the position open on the site.  Job seekers should also look in local newspapers for private school openings and coaching positions.  To apply for a Wisconsin license go to the link:  How to Apply for License.

Jobs are also posted on WEACAN

The WECAN website walks you through uploading your documents.  You have to scan them in .jpg format and use a program you download from the site to format them correctly.  In your "file attachments" menu of WECAN it walks through the process.

Teacher Perceiver Information

Some school districts will require teacher candidates to take a pre-screening test before deciding whom to interview.  The Teacher Perceiver is the most popular of these tests in our state.  Candidates are encouraged to refect on vision, mission, empathy, teamwork, problem solving, and committment.  Each one of these questions is getting at how the candidate applies this to the student.   The applicant needs to be specific and to the point---rambling only hurts the applicant's score.  There are different forms of perceivers, but each one is assessing the potential fit of the candidate to that school district.  Schools are drilling deeper than just the lesson plan and content knowledge to locate candidates who are highly motivated, loyal and work well with people

Suggested Items For An Interview Portfolio

It is highly recommend that all students go to a teaching interview with a nice looking three-ring binder with select documents in plastic sleeves.  While some administrators will ask to reivew the electronic portfolio you will do for our program, some will only be interested in reviewing a hardcopy during or immediately after your interview.  It is absolutely necessary to include up to ten copies of your resume in case the interviewers ask you to provide them.  If they ask for them is usually a test of your organization skills.  It is also really smart of you to have a nice folder or a CD of your TWS or some unit/lessons plans to share with individuals.  This is a nice touch that can set you apart from the crowd and worked well for some former students.

Items to include in an interview portfolio: 10 Resume copies on good paper; a copy of the cover letter you sent to the district interviewing you as they will sometimes reference it; a copy of your license or letter from us stating you finished our program; all original copies of your Letters of Reference; any special awards/certificates/licenses/CPR certifications; include your Teacher Work Sample as a great example of your unit planning and teaching ability; copies of student work with names removed; evaluations from your cooperating teachers/field work/supervisors if you don't have a Letter of Reference from them; notes/evaluations from students; and any special lesson plans you are especially proud of that showcase your teaching ability.

No matter what you chose to put in your portfolio, make sure you know where all of your items are located so you can quickly find them during an interview.  For example, if you were asked about student achievement you could say, "I completed a Teacher Work Sample while I was student teaching that shows exactly what you are asking for and here it is..."  At that point you would open the binder and walk them through what you did.  Some interviewers will not be interested in looking over documents, but knowing that you came prepared for the interview will be noticed.  Show up 10-15 minutes before the interview and introduce yourself to the secretary.  Do not bother them if they are busy, but if they are talkative you might be able to glean some great hints from them if you hit it off with them right away.  One question to ask secretaries is how many people are being interviewed for the job as adminstrators rarely tell you.  A typical number is 3-8. Your interview starts as soon as you arrive at the school.
