Viterbo's Broad Field Science license (601) is a portion of the Natural Science Major. Students who obtain this license are able to teach all science classes from grades 6-10. Students will only be able to teach the advanced science courses that they have completed a major in for grades 11 and 12. It is possible to obtain a teaching job with only this license, but about half of our students pair it with either Biology or Chemistry to be more marketable. We suggest that if you are close to two licenses to put in the extra time to obtain both now as it is difficult to find science classes at night or during the summer to finish a second license later when you are teaching.
One to three science licenses can be obtained and all student taught the same semester. To obtain all three science licenses (Biology, Chemistry, BFS) the major course requirements are required for either Biology or Chemistry, all BFS courses must be completed, and the minor requirements must be met in the other content area (Biology or Chemistry).
Complete Broad Field Science license course requirements (Broad Field Science, education, general education) with substitutions, waivers, and clep exams permitted with committee approval.
