Viterbo’s sport leadership program is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to pursue either a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science and Leadership, or a Bachelor of Business Administration in Sport Management and Leadership. Students in the program take nine common courses and either 38 credits of sport science coursework or 38 credits of sport management coursework. The program is housed officially in the Dahl School of Business, though jointly coordinated by Dahl School of Business faculty and School of Letters and Sciences faculty.
What makes our Sport Leadership Program distinctive is that it (1) features seven liberal arts courses focused on sport, (2) is truly interdisciplinary, and, (3) has a strong emphasis on leadership and ethics. There are lots of sport management programs and sport science programs available, but there are very few programs that feature a core of common courses from the liberal arts coupled with a strong business or science curriculum emphasizing ethical leadership.
The common core of nine courses (33 credits minimum) provides a strong foundation in ethical leadership, management, research methods, and the psychology of sport. The sport science and leadership major is designed to prepare students for graduate programs related to sport and exercise science including: physical therapy, human performance and conditioning, athletic training, pre-med, rehabilitation studies.
Examples of courses in the sport science and leadership degree program:
- Lifestyles, Health, and Wellness
- Introduction to First Aid
- Event Management
- Sport Psychology
- Exercise Physiology
- Ethical Leadership in Sport
- Strategic Planning in Sport
- Nutrition for Human Performance
In addition, the program has a solid foundation in research methods, statistics, biology, chemistry, and physics.
