Welcome to the department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice Web page. Consistent with the Franciscan values of Viterbo University our department strives to create in our students a sense of the importance of justice in all areas of life, respect for the human dignity of each individual, and a life-long commitment to service in our communities.
We offer both a B.A. and a B.S. in Sociology, as well as a B.A. in sociology with a minor in Education for students who want to focus on teaching. We also offer both a B.A. and B.S. in Social Sork, a B.S. in Criminal Justice, and a minor in Sociology. Additionally, AODA certification as well as police certification training is available.
We believe the strength of our department is in the multi-disciplinary focus of our degree programs. It allows students to broaden their learning environment by developing awareness and appreciation for the connections we have in our disciplines. Also, students have the benefit of learning from excellent part-time faculty who are professionals in the community.
The department offers a strong academic foundation with an array of theoretical, practical, and applied courses. All three programs emphasize the development of research skills for our students. Classes are small and, therefore, encourage interaction and discussion, and facilitates more individualized attention.
Our faculty and staff are dedicated to assisting students in their long-term development. Faculty members utilize a hands-on, personal approach with students. You will meet individually with your advisor to develop academic and career plans for your future. Also, students clubs such as Social Work and Criminal Justice/Sociology develop students’ professionalism.
We invite you to join our department. We are committed to understanding society in the 21st century and applying that knowledge in our professional and personal lives.
