Moving Away From Home
Leaving for college involves a variety of emotions. It can be exciting, nerve-wracking, and scary all at the same time. Here are a few suggestions on how to cope with living way from home for the first time.
We suggest that you keep your eating habits in check. It is very easy to forgo the fruits and vegetables for pizza and junk food. Weight gain or illness may occur, especially when a student is experiencing the stress of a changing academic and living environment. Make sure you take care of yourself physically, which means following proper nutritional guidelines and getting regular exercise. You can always visit our School Nurse in the Student Development Center or use the Mathy Center facilities.
Take the time to make friends. When you move away to college, it is easy to get into a funk and become slightly depressed because your old friends are no longer around. Almost everyone else in your residence hall is experiencing the same thing, so be the brave one and go out to meet people. Invite your floor mates to dinner at the dining hall or offer to walk to class with someone new. Branching out will help you to effectively cope with moving away from home.
Clubs, Intramurals, and Spiritual and Religious activities
Expanding socially may help you to beat the freshman blues of moving away from home. We have clubs, recreational sports, and spiritual and religious activities. More than likely, there is just about something for everyone, so take the time to find something that may fit you. This is also a good opportunity to meet other people at your school who may share similar interests with you. On September 1, during Welcome Week, there will be the first Club Fair, which is an opportunity for you to learn about and join different organizations on campus.
There is nothing wrong with feeling a tinge of homesickness and indulging those feelings by going home to visit family and friends. As long as you do not abuse the privilege and go home all the time, this may be a good way for you to adjust to college life. We do suggest that you avoid going home for the first six weeks of classes to familiarize yourself with campus life. If you are feeling homesick or need someone to talk to, your Resident Assistant is always available. You can also contact the School Counselor in the Student Development Center.
Moving away from home is a major step in adulthood. Keeping these tips in mind may help you to cope with moving away from home to go to college. Keep in mind, however, that living on your own should be fun and exciting.
Please start your move-in process by checking in with Orientation Leaders and Residence Life staff who will be located in the Hawks Nest (south end of Marian Hall, first floor). There you will receive important paperwork as well as further instructions.
-Students moving into rooms on the second and third floors of Marian Hall should move belongings into the hall using door #1(number will be posted on door) located on Franciscan Way. Students moving into rooms on the first floor of Marian Hall should move belongings into the hall using Door #2 (number will be posted on door) located on Franciscan Way.

REFRESHMENT BREAK. Enjoy some goodies as families depart before scheduled orientation activities begin. Fine Arts Center Lobby. 2-2:30 p.m.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CHECK-IN
Getting to Your Room
Upon arrival, please park in the 10 minute parking areas. You will the proceed to your designated check-in area (see above). When you check in you will be greeted by Orientation Leaders and Resident assistants who will be assisting you through your move in process. After you have checked in you will continue to your assigned floor to meet your Resident Assistant (RA). Your RA will give you your room key and ask you to complete some paperwork before moving into your room. Student volunteers will be available to assist you in all of your move in needs.
Move – In Traffic and Parking
You may park on Market Street, 8th Street, Lot D, or Franciscan Way depending on which door you use. Ten minute unloading zones will be designated where Orientation Leaders and move-in helpers will be available to move items to the curbsides and into rooms. Please move your vehicle to Parking Lot A after you have unloaded to allow others to unload. All vehicles without permits must be moved from campus parking lots by evening. Parking Permits are available to upper class students only; Resident Guaranteed-lots D, F and L. Please review the Campus Map for detailed directions.
Move – In Resources
The Residence Life Office will be offering a continental breakfast in the Marian Courtyard during move-in. Also, a limited number of tools, vacuums, brooms, dust pans and moving carts are available for check-out from the Student Union Security Desk, but you may want to bring these items from home to ensure you have them when you need them.
Bikes are always a great way of transportation around the city. The university provides a number of bike racks around campus. We ask that all students who bring a bike to campus register their bike. A station will be set up outside Marian Hall where you can register your bike for $5. The university will provide storage for your bike during the winter months if needed.
