Reading Endorsement #148 (K–8)
1. A minimum of two years successful regular classroom (non-substitute) teaching
experience is required for state licensure. You may apply to the program and
begin coursework before this requirement for licensure is fulfilled.
2. The following courses are required:
EDUC 519: Assessment and Treatment of Reading Difficulties K–8 (3 credits)
EDUC 542: Teaching the Art of Writing K–12 (3 credits)
EDUC 550: Children’s Literature K-8 (3 credits)
EDUC 568: Improving Oral Communication (2 credits)
EDUC 605: Inclusion of Students with Special Needs K–12 (3 credits)
EDUC 640: Balanced Literacy K–12 (3 credits)
EDUC 650: Content Reading and Study Strategies K–12 (3 credits)
EDUC 681: Emergent Literacy PK–3 (3 credits)
EDUC 683 (formerly 789): Practicum in Reading Disabilities (1 credit)
3. Upon completion of the program the student is required to fill out a Special Recognition Award application. Please fill out the form and send it to the Iowa Office. This form is needed for transcripts to reflect a new endorsement.
