Good news on NCATE site review
The School of Education sends a big thank you to all who assisted in the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) site review from Oct. 17-21. Although we won’t have the official word on accreditation until next spring, the exit interview indicated that we did extremely well. The team found only two weaknesses: diversity of faculty and diversity of student body.
Get on the bus!
Results from the employee interest survey regarding the MTU “Bus Works” program are in. Sixty-eight surveys were returned and 15 individuals indicated interest in learning more about the program. This level of interest is sufficient to move to the next step and the program will be offered to Viterbo employees provided the initial number of interested participant is confirmed. Watch Connections for details.
Inclement weather plan
Viterbo College’s inclement weather plan is invoked only in the most serious times, when conditions make travel to and from campus dangerously imprudent or other events cause serious safety concerns. However, in cases of severe weather, conditions throughout the region vary significantly. Individuals should exercise prudence in determining the safety of a commute from their respective location. If the condition warrants, suitable arrangements between instructor and student will be made to make up for the absence.
• When conditions warrant (dangerous temperatures, snow, ice, wind or rain) or other events (i.e. electrical failure, chemical spill), a decision will be made in consultation or upon the authorization of the President or his designee to determine if classes are canceled. Based on changing condition, the plan can be implemented at any time.
• In the event that classes are canceled, Public Relations and Marketing will notify the media.
• Individual class cancellation:
For faculty: providing information about specific class cancellation, call 796-3080 or 796-3190.
For students: seeking information about specific class cancellations, call 796-3200.
• In the event that classes are canceled, those responsible for directing a special event (i.e. fine arts performance, athletic contest, music lesson), may or may not determine to hold or cancel the planned event. The responsible party is required to provide appropriate notification to participants.
Hourly employees who do not report to work, report late, or leave work before the end of the work day because of weather conditions, will be allowed to make up lost time during the remainder of the work week, as much time as is beneficial to the office and college. Leave without pay, or vacation pay may be used, if preferred, to cover the absence. In the case of a salaried employee, the immediate supervisor should work out an arrangement to make up for the lost time in a manner consistent with the employee’s work assignment.

V-Hawk sports update
by Jerry Smith
Men’s soccer team continues great year
Something great is happening to the Viterbo College men’s soccer team in what is supposed to be a rebuilding year for the V-Hawks…they are winning beyond any expectations.
That probably doesn’t surprise some soccer aficionados, but to some, the mere fact that the V-Hawks are 11-5-1 so far this season, despite starting with an 0-3 record, is very surprising.
It probably surprises those same people that the V-Hawks are getting it done with a mostly freshman lineup.
A freshman-heavy roster usually doesn’t have much success until they have played together a year or two. Luckily for head coach Bruce Erickson, the V-Hawks are the exception.
The freshmen are only a part of the success story for Erickson and the V-Hawks. Viterbo has enjoyed some big wins this year and finished atop the Midwest Classic Conference standings with a perfect 6-0 record.
That success story is still unfolding. Wednesday afternoon, the V Hawks host a second-round game in the MCC tournament at the new outdoor complex. They are hoping to break the MCC tournament jinx and take the tourney title, which would give them an automatic berth into the Midwest Region Tournament.
Without sounding like a cheerleader, get out and support the V-Hawks! Game time is 2 p.m., Wed. If the V-Hawks win, they would host the championship game 2 p.m. on Fri.
Here’s a perfect opportunity to get out of the office and enjoy your surroundings at the new complex. Come on out and root on the men’s soccer team…you owe it to yourself.
• More men’s soccer: Congratulations to forward Jeff Dally for surpassing Kurt Baertsch on the Top 10 all-time leading scorers list. Dally, who was named last weeks’ co-player of the week in the MCC, scored one goal and added two assists in the V-Hawks’ 3-2 overtime win against Grand View giving the Eagan, Minn., junior 67 points in his two-year career at Viterbo, and puts him on pace to be only the fifth 100-point scorer in Viterbo history with a good senior year showing.
• Women’s soccer: 2 p.m., Nov. 2, the women’s soccer team hosts a first-round game in the MCC tournament against Grand View at the new field. Let’s fill the stands for this game!
• Basketball season reminder: The basketball season is quickly approaching, with the first men’s home game on Nov. 17 and the women’s first home game on Nov. 20. All Viterbo College employees receive a free pass, good for the employee and a guest.
• Basketball season tickets for both men’s and women’s teams are on sale in the Viterbo College athletics office. For more information, call Sandy, x3811.
Vote! Election day, Tuesday, Nov. 3
College graduates are more likely to vote. In Nov. 1996, 77 percent of citizens with at least a bachelor’s degree voted, compared with 48 percent who didn’t attend college.
Vote Smart manuals on reserve in library
Three Vote Smart manuals are on reserve in the library until after election day. They are filed under Knutson at the circulation desk. The books are:
The Reporter's Source Book, a resource for political journalists.
The Vote Smart Web Yellow Pages, with sections on web sites by Federal, State or Issue.
The Voter's Self Defense Manual, a source of information on incumbant legislators.
These resources are on loan from S. Marcella Steffes.
News you’ll notice
by Jay McHenry
Here’s the latest from Physical Plant, the little brown building at 914 S. 9th St. Big news is the changes in the building access times. Using the new card access system, changes are being made that will enhance evening hours safety in the academic buildings. At 5pm, Oct. 30, these hours will be in effect. They are only for academic buildings and good for Semesters I and II, and Summer Session. These times are not for holiday, breaks, or school vacations (key open/close are when all doors to that building are open; card open/close are only those doors which operate with the id/access card). Times run Mon.to Sun. unless otherwise noted.

Another item generating interest lately is parking. Record enrollment has maximized parking lot usage. There is some confusion regarding present policies and practices.
#1 Parking sticker location. Every sticker is issued with a note stating that the sticker is to be placed on the driver’s- side of the bumper. Stickers will also be allowed in the bottom driver’s-side of the rear window. Any vehicle found parked in Viterbo lots (except the reserved Church lot) that does not have a sticker in either of these locations will receive a $20 trespassing ticket issued by the city of La Crosse. If the sticker is placed on the back window and falls down, a ticket will still be issued. Due to the time it takes to patrol the lots, the stickers must be in a consistent, visible location.
#2 Illegally parked. For a vehicle to be legally parked in a paved lot, it must be in a parking stall that is bounded by two yellow stripes or a yellow stripe and curb/sidewalk. Any vehicle not found parked in such a parking stall will receive a $5 illegal parking ticket issued by the city of La Crosse. For a vehicle to be legally parked in a non-paved lot, it must be parked in front of a curb stop (except where allowed next to the Physical Plant office). Any vehicle found blocking an entrance or parking on a sidewalk will receive the $5 ticket. If you parked illegally before and were not ticketed, from now on you may be ticketed.
#3 Warnings. Present warning cards have proven ineffective, thus warnings have not been issued.
#4 Newly vacated street areas are for pedestrian travel. Only emergency vehicles, approved vendors and Physical Plant vehicles are allowed to temporarily park there. Rose Terrace and MHS residents loading and unloading are permitted only on Winnebago at the beginning and end of the school year. Any other vehicle found parking in the vacated street areas will receive the $20 trespassing ticket.
A new parking system is currently being drafted. Your suggestions and comments are welcomed anytime by calling me at x3921 or e-mailing me at jdmchenry@mail.viterbo.edu.
Three more parking items: 1) Alternate side parking goes into effect Nov. 1; 2) Temporary bus parking for FAC events will be along the north side of 800 and 700 block of Mississippi St.; 3) The Fine Arts parking lot is a commuter lot. No overnight parking is allowed without authorization. Vehicles parked overnight could receive a $5 ticket. Snow removal will be a factor, also.
It’s a fine way to treat a Steinway
The Save Our Steinways, (SOS) committee helped raise $4,000 at a fun and fabulous progressive dinner in September. Committee members are: Gloria Vallejo, Fe Abellera, Jan Brock, Julie Noll, Sandy Locher, Janet Virata, Barbara Rice and Mary Fund.
Eighty people enjoyed appetizers and dinner served at the homes of Mario & Fe Abellera, George & Sallye Sanders, John Cochran & Margaret Grenisen, Mariel Carlisle, and Bill & Doris Skemp.
Judy Danielson, exec. chef at the Radisson, and ARAMACK food service, planned and prepared the beautiful dinner which featured a chocolate grand piano dessert. The music faculty and students did a marvelous program to “top off” the wonderful evening.
It’s great and critical to have community volunteers and supporters help with the arts!
Quotes
A Dilbert quotes contest garnered some of the most Dilbertesque comments from actual managers. Here are a few:
“What I need is a list of specific unknown problems we will encounter.”
“Turnover is good for the company, as it proves that we are doing a good job in training people.”
“Doing it right is no excuse for not meeting the schedule.”
“As of tomorrow, employees will only be able to access the building using individual security cards. Pictures will be taken next Wednesday and employees will receive their cards in two weeks.”
