Why Philosophy at Viterbo?

Philosophy Class 3

  • Viterbo is a Catholic, Ecumenical University in the Liberal Arts Tradition, and so philosophy is valued and supported across the university as a vital area of study.
  • The philosophy degree is very flexible, making it easy to graduate in four years and get a minor or even double-major along the way.
  • Small classes (most upper division classes have less than 15 students) ensure that students get the maximum attention they deserve.
  • Gifted, scholarship active and committed faculty who are dedicated to mentoring students.
  • BA degree that introduces students to all the major branches of philosophy: History of Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophical Anthropology, Logic, Ethics, Epistemology and Metaphysics.  Students are introduced to a variety of philosophical traditions (Eastern Philosophy, Latin-American Philosophy, and both European and Anglo-American perspectives).
  • The department has strengths in both ethics and applied ethics, offering a range of courses that look at ethics in relation to law, medicine, business, education, the environment, and science.
  • Viterbo is also home to the D.B. Reinhart Center for Ethics in Leadership.
  • There is an active Philosophy Club on campus and the department provides many opportunities for students to present their work at conferences or compete for publication.
    • Philosophy Club provides an intellectual community to discuss meaningful ideas and topics.  The club promotes thoughtfulness, clear thinking and a respect for the opinion of others.  We discuss current philosophical issues as well as those that have existed for milennia.

  • Analytical Teaching and Philosophical Praxis is Viterbo's own online, open access, peer-reviewed, academic journal dedicated to philosophy and its relevancy for education.
  • Philosophy is housed in the joint department of Religious Studies/Philosophy, giving students unique resources and perspectives that draw on rich interplay between philosophy and theology.
  • Viterbo emphasizes service-learning as an important part of a well-rounded philosophical education, offering courses that provide unique service components like "philosophy for children".
