Philosophy at Viterbo

Philosophy is being recognized more and more as one of the strongest and most versatile undergraduate degrees you can obtain. In fact, we live in an age where employers want employees to be more than just knowledgeable in their chosen field, employers want critical thinkers, clear communicators, and ethical decision makers. These skills are central to the study of philosophy.

At Viterbo, the philosophy program encourages exploration and discussion of fundamental questions and issues that proceed from the core values of the Catholic, Franciscan tradition, including contemplation, hospitality, integrity, and a commitment to truth, faith, hope, and charity. While many majors teach critical thinking and ethical decision making indirectly through course content, the philosophy major focuses on these subjects directly. With small class sizes and a focus on mentoring, Viterbo nurtures this development.

After fall of 2018, applications are no longer being accepted for the Philosophy major. To explore other options at Viterbo please visit the lists of Majors and Minors.

“Majoring in philosophy at Viterbo was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. The program offers a wide variety of classes that allow you to be exposed to the continental tradition. What makes the program unique is the breadth of knowledge, flexibility, energy, and guidance. The program has provided me a strong philosophical grounding that has prepared me for a master’s degree in public policy with a concentration on philosophy and social policy.”
