REQUIRED PHYSICAL
AND VIRTUAL TEXTS
AND A WORD
ABOUT
THEIR USE
The following texts should be purchased from the Viterbo Bookstore:
-- The Harbrace Handbook, 13th Edition
-- Stuff: the Secret Lives of Everyday Things
Reading is a slippery thing; even when you do it, it can get away from you. That's why these course texts should be thought of as sites of active participation. When you read them, interact with them. Write in them. Make notes so that you have something to show for your reading. That way, when you bring your book for class discussion, all the ideas you had while you were reading won't suddenly disappear. They will be marked in the margins for you to use.
In addition to these required texts, there will be a number of supplemental texts which will either be photocopied and on reserve in the Viterbo Library, or posted on this website for you to download.
You will also be required to critically
analyze web texts and sources for your inquiry essay. More important
than the minor expenses that might come along with printing or photocopying
these is the challenge that research and inquiry will present to you.
To succeed in this course, you must be prepared to be curious about the
subject matters you address in your essays and you must act on that curiosity
with enthusiasm and careful consideration.
