USEFUL AND INTERESTING WEB RESOURCES


Listed below are a variety of websites which might be useful to you in numerous ways.  Some of these sites publish the work of young writers.  You might consider making one of these sites the audience for one of your formal essays or your inquiry essay.  Other sites publish essays by more experienced, professional writers and might be useful as information resources or as models for various forms and styles of writing.  Other sites contain indexes, where you can search for topics of interest to you.  These might help you generate subject ideas or find resources for exploring the subjects that interest you.  Because I am just beginning the process of compiling this resource list, the sites below are not organized alphabetically or by subject.  My apologies.
 

Yahoo! index of sites for young readers and writers:  multiple subject matters emphasizing youth culture

Write On E-zine:  a web publication featuring the work of young writers

Impact Magazine:  this website publishes work by young writers for young readers on a variety of topics, from teen alcohol use to politics to computers in the classroom.  Also contains links to other interesting sites.

E-Zine Indexes:  published in Impact Magazine, this is a short article about the value of electronic media and links to thorough indexes of web publishing sites.

Google:  this is the best search engine, I think, because it's not cluttered with commercial content.

Why Elementary Students Should Read Shakespeare:  posted on the Writers Write website, this is a web article by an elementary teacher.

Biology, Chemistry, and Writing Center Alchemy:  an essay by three tutors at the Coe Writing Center, concerning the ways that writing is valued in scientific disciplines and the ways that English majors can (or can't) help the scientific writer in tutoring situations.

Association for the Study of Literature and Environment:  biology and literature items of interest.

Similes Draw Smiles from Young Writers:  article on a useful classroom exercise by an elementary teacher and researcher.

Barnes College of Nursing: Nursing Writing, Publishing, and Journal Resources:  useful site for Nursing majors, includes writing tips for the field of nursing and an index of online Nursing journals.

Georgetown University School of Nursing/Writing Program Initiative:  useful for both Nursing majors and education majors interested in writing as a cross-disciplinary learning tool.  The initiative is designed to help nurses use writing as a means of critical inquiry.

Medical Humanities Program at UC Irvine:  the world of medicine viewed through essays, poems, and personal reflections--a humanized, non-clinical approach to medical subjects.

Ancient Egypt and the Origins of Writing:  an amateur site tracing the roots of writing and civilization.

University of Minnesota Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Writing:  the center for a major UM project to establish writing as a central learning process across the entire curriculum.  Of interest for education majors.

The Death of Sportswriting:  has the art of the sports essay faded into oblivion?  Yes, according to this author.
