If you can't make it, here's your assignment:  write a brief (2-3 page) paper comparing and contrasting the two poems from After the Storm.  How do the two poems "work with" the subject matter of the Gulf War?  Does one or the other poem seem more effective, either aesthetically or politically?  How do these two arenas--the aesthetic and the political--seem to go together, in your opinion?

12/6:  Workshop: bring three "key" poems from your portfolio.  In groups, generate phrases that overview these poems.  Imagine you were writing a review of these poems, what kinds of active, original characterizations could you invent to describe them.

12/8:  Workshop: editing your poems.  Bring all the poems you're considering for the portfolio.  Work on editing them (not revising--"revising" is the stage where you're making substantial changes to poems; in the "editing" stage, you're making your punctuation/capitalization strategies consistent, looking at ineffective word choices and bulky phrasings, checking your formatting, spelling, etc.).

12/10:  Workshop: draft of critical intro.  Last questions.  Course evals.

Finals week

Thursday, 12/16: portfolios due by 3:30 PM in classroom (because I have to pick my daughter up at school at 3, I probably won't be here until 3:30).
