2/3: Due at end of class: Topic proposal due for Scrapbook. In one page or less, provide the name of your topic, i.e., "Drug Testing in Professional Sports," a list of three to five issues you anticipate researching, i.e., "different testing policies in different sports," "athletes' civil liberties regarding testing and 'probable cause,'" and "treatment of athletes with drug problems." Then, provide a well-written paragraph describing how you arrived at this topic and why you think the topic will work well for the scrapbook. Library time for research

2/17: Scrapbook Entry #3 due. Please include a photocopy of the article, and save the original article for your scrapbook. In-class: marketing and advertising as argument. Quiz questions on "FRONTLINE: The Persuaders"
6 2/22: Workshop: articles for Entry #4 Open book quiz on MLA style: see chapter 20 of The St. Martin's Handbook. Here, I'll be testing your ability to put together correct citations for a book, a magazine article, an article from an academic journal, and an article printed from an electronic database. I'll also test to make sure you understand when to use italics (or underlining) and quotation marks for indicating the titles of works in your writing.
2/24: Scrapbook Entry #4 due. Open book quiz on comma splices and fused sentences (ch. 39), sentence fragments (40), commas (48), and semicolons (49). Here, I'll be testing your ability to correct sentences with errors in the above areas. I suggest you skim the sections closely, stopping to examine those concepts you don't grasp.
