CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH THE TROUBLE WITH MY NAME BY JAVIER ÁVILA OCT. 12

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Trouble with My Name, a performance by professor, author, and actor Javier Ávila will be broadcast via Zoom at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 for both the Viterbo University and La Crosse communities in celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month 2020.

To view this free event live on Zoom, email lasp@viterbo.edu to request the registration link.

The Trouble with My Name tells the story of a Puerto Rican teacher moving from the island to the continental U.S. It includes pictures, poems, music, autobiographical narrative, family memorabilia, and historical accounts in order to, in a comedic style, debate the ethnic and cultural stereotypes about Hispanics and/or Latinos in America today.

In a recent interview, Avila said, “The purpose of the show is to promote equity, we want to be perceived as equals not as victims. We do not need a savior, we need allies.” The show has been touring since 2016 across the U.S., helping to educate on topics of race, equity and inclusion, especially at American colleges and universities.

At Viterbo, sponsors include the Office of the Provost, International and Intercultural Student Success, the Social Justice and Equity Committee, and the departments of history, social work, and English and world languages.
