VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT TONY AWARD™-WINNING MUSICAL AVENUE Q AT THE WEBER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS MARCH 31–APRIL 2; APRIL 7–9
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University theatre and music theatre students will present the Tony Award™-winning musical Avenue Q at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts Friday, March 31–Sunday, April 2 and Friday, April 7–Sunday, April 9.
Winner of the Tony™ Award for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, Avenue Q is the hilarious musical that tells the story of Princeton and his friends as they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their purpose in life. It is a coming of age parable about the anxieties of entering adulthood for characters who have been assured by their parents and Sesame Street and other children’s programs that they were special and could do anything. As adults however, reality rudely introduces them to the real world and they find out they are no more special than anyone else.
“Audiences are bound to enjoy Avenue Q because of its light hearted, fun, nostalgic, and sometimes racy nature,” said Matt Campbell, the Viterbo University faculty member who is directing and choreographing the production.
Avenue Q is known for its use of puppets as characters. The content and audience interaction makes it perfect for a more intimate venue such as the Weber Center, Campbell said.
“It is a unique and innovative show audiences flocked to when it premiered in 2003,” Campbell said. “It is highly entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny. Additionally, we have an immensely talented cast who have realized that there are no small parts, just small puppets.”
Campbell is joined by fellow faculty member Nancy Allen, who is serving as the music director. Guest designers include Mark Parrott (scenic design/puppet design) and Jason Underferth (lighting design), with Viterbo student Caitlin Fanning as the costume designer.
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. March 31–April 1 and April 7–8. The April 2 and April 9 shows are at 2 p.m. An Arts in Context discussion will be held immediately following the April 1 performance. Avenue Q contains language and themes appropriate for mature audiences.
This performance is part of Viterbo University’s NexStar season and is sponsored by Wells Fargo. KQEG-TV is the media sponsor.
Avenue Q features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, and is based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.
