OPERA PERFORMANCE
WORKSHOP AT VITERBO UNIVERSITY
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University
music department will host its second Opera Performance Workshop Tuesday, Aug.
7–Saturday, Aug. 11 in the Fine Arts Center. A free public performance of
various opera scenes will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 in the Viterbo
Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.
Workshop
participants are high school juniors and seniors and university
undergraduates. Participants have been
practicing their music at home over the summer in preparation for the workshop,
which will focus on staging of the scenes selected, acting and movement, and
vocal coaching. Scenes for this year’s workshop come from works including The Magic Flute, The Merry Widow, and Hansel and Gretel.
“The Opera
Performance Workshop is created for young singers to explore performance
practices in the opera genre in a true learning environment,” said Dan
Johnson-Wilmot, Viterbo faculty member and director of the workshop. “Singers
who are interested in a vocal performance career will find this workshop to be
a great asset in their operatic training.”
Viterbo faculty
members teaching the workshop include Johnson-Wilmot, Ann Schoenecker, David
Richardson, and Nancy Allen. Brent Wilson, a Los Angeles based tenor and avid
soloist who specializes in operatic character repertoire, will also
participate.
