LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University will host the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities (AFCU) 2012 National Summer Symposium “Franciscan Leadership: Serving, Learning, and Leading” Tuesday, June 12–Thursday, June 14.

Keynote speakers for the event will be Kent Keith, CEO of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership; Aurelie Hagstrom, associate professor of theology at Providence College, the author of a number of widely acclaimed books, including her latest work The Emerging Laity: Vocation, Mission, and Spirituality; and Tom Thibodeau, director of the Master of Arts in Servant Leadership program at Viterbo University.

More than 300 participants from the 20 Franciscan universities in the U.S. are expected to attend the AFCU Symposium. In the spirit of St. Francis, participants will explore the ways in which people are called to serve the communities in which they live and work, to learn together about the communities and needs, and to prepare to lead for the sake of the common good. The event will feature many presenters, discussion groups, and breakout sessions.

Viterbo is proud to host this national meeting,” said Viterbo President Rick Artman. “It will be a great opportunity to showcase Viterbo’s focus on and commitment to Franciscan values and servant leadership. Likewise, we look forward to sharing the beauty of our region with participants and to contributing to the economic benefits such a conference brings to the city and the surrounding communities.”

In addition to the usual variety of conference sessions, this year’s symposium will include a special student track dedicated to presentations by and for undergraduate students.

Registration for the event is now open. To register, submit a proposal, or to learn more about the symposium, visit the AFCU website at
