VITERBO TO PRESENT THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO FEB. 25–27
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University students will present the classic comic opera The Marriage of Figaro Friday, Feb. 25–Sunday, Feb. 27 in the Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.
One of the most famous operas ever written, The Marriage of Figaro features the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the comic genius of Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais with a libretto by Lorenzo de Ponte. This Viterbo production will be presented in English.
“The Marriage of Figaro isn’t just something old we’ve dusted off, it’s a great piece of music and theatre,” said David Roth, general director of Kentucky Opera, who is serving as the guest director of the production. “There is a real contemporary connection to this work and modern domestic situations, with love, lost love, betrayal, revenge, and forgiveness.”
The opera is a continuation of the plot of another famous opera, The Barber of Seville, with the infamous barber and jack-of-all-trades, Figaro. It recounts a single day in the palace of Count Almaviva and features beautiful melodies, intricate comedic plots, and a surprising resolution.
“The Marriage of Figaro is one of the top 10 operas ever composed,” Roth said. “Whatever you love about music theatre, you’ll find it here. Audiences will be entertained and emotionally engaged. It’s an evening in the theatre that you must see.”
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25–26 and 2 p.m. Feb. 27. The Marriage of Figaro is part of Viterbo’s Bright Star season and is co-sponsored by WXOW TV-19 and by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board, with funds from the State of Wisconsin.
Tickets are $19 for main floor, $17 for lower balcony, and $14 for upper balcony seating. For more information, contact the Viterbo box office at 608-796-3100 or boxoffice@viterbo.edu.
