VITERBO UNIVERSITY RECEIVES STATE APPROVAL TO OFFER SUPERINTENDENT LICENSE
LA CROSSE, Wis—Viterbo University has received approval from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to offer a superintendent’s license in a program expected to begin this summer.
According to Bernie Ferry, co-director of Viterbo’s educational leadership program, the licensure will address the shortage of superintendents needed to meet the demands of school districts across Wisconsin.
According to the National Association of School Principals, it is estimated that 40 percent of all school superintendents will be retiring within the next five years. Many districts have appointed their superintendents using an interim status until they are officially credentialed.
Ferry indicates Viterbo worked with a number of former and current superintendents to create the curriculum. “We’ve received very good feedback and it’s very rewarding to know that we are meeting a great need,” he said.
The program will offer courses in theory and application of the Superintendent, ethical leadership, curriculum-instruction assessment, legal issues, financial management, and a practicum experience.
The approval of the Superintendent License program is in addition to licensure programs for Principal, Director of Instruction, and Director of Special Education and Pupil Services in the Viterbo Educational Leadership program. Over the past five years, more than 500 professionals have received licensure in these programs.
