LA CROSSE, Wis.—An Aquinas High School senior from La Crosse is the winner of Viterbo University’s Pre-Professional Scholarship, the school’s most competitive and lucrative scholarship.

Molly Simones was selected Feb. 24 at the end of a day of testing and campus interviews given to the 25 finalists competing for the scholarship. To be eligible for the competition, students needed to have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare or science and be at or near the top of their graduation class. Simones, who had a score of 32 on the ACT test, plans to major in pre-med. She is the daughter of Bruce and Mary Beth Simones of La Crosse.

The Pre-Professional Scholarship, which is renewable from year to year, covers complete tuition costs for up to four years and is valued in excess of $68,000.

According to Dr. Roland Nelson, Viterbo’s vice president for enrollment, the top five contestants are always well prepared students with high ACT test scores and grade point averages, but the winner will often outrank the other finalists in social skills when interviewed by the faculty scholarship committee.

“Certainly this was the case with Molly Simones, who fared very well in her interview,” Nelson said.
