JULLIARD GRADUATE TO PERFORM BALLET MASTERCLASS AT VITERBO
LA CROSSE, Wis.—A graduate of The Julliard School and New York University, Joan Karlen will lead a ballet masterclass in the Dance Studio located on the first floor of the Viterbo Fine Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m.
The event is open to area dancers with an intermediate to advanced skill level. Attendees must be middle school age or older. There is an admission charge of $3 for the masterclass, payable at the door.
Karlen has performed with modern dance and ballet companies in New York, regionally, and on Broadway. She has been a member of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Theatre & Dance faculty since 1988; was Director of Point Musical Theatre & Dance Camp from 1989-1999; and was selected to participate in the University of Wisconsin Leadership Institute’s Initiative on the Status of Women this past summer. This fall, her book, a memoir on her early dance teacher Gisela Lemmens, will be published, and she will serve as a judge for the International Dance on Camera Festival 2000 in New York. In 1998, Karlen presented her video dances, computer-generated dances, and interactive CD-ROM at the Continents in Movement Conference, in Lisbon, Portugal, and at Ohio State University. She has received many awards including a University Leadership Mentor Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Wisconsin Arts Board’s Choreography Fellowship.
