VITERBO UNIVERSITY PRESENTS DAMES AT SEA NOV. 9–10, 15–18
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University will present a musical for audiences young and old, Dames at Sea, Friday, Nov. 9, Saturday, Nov. 10 and Thursday, Nov. 15–Sunday, Nov. 18 in the Fine Arts Center La Croix Black Box Theatre.
Dames at Sea is a charming, singing, tap-dancing musical comedy satire, which spoofs with great affection the 1930s Busby Berkeley backstage musicals, particularly 42nd Street. The story revolves around a chorus girl wannabe who arrives in New York City with just her tap shoes in her suitcase. She finds love with a sailor, who just happens to be a songwriter, and near instant stardom on Broadway.
“This show has no message and no lessons, just a great sense of humor about ‘the business,’” said Susan Rush, Viterbo music theatre faculty member and director of the show. “The idea that any nobody could come to New York City and immediately get thrust into stardom on Broadway is simply ludicrous, but is also a silly dream of every student who moves to the city to ‘make it.’”
The performances of Dames at Sea are at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of Sunday, Nov. 18, which will be at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission seating. For more information, contact the Viterbo University box office at 608-796-3100 or www.viterbo.edu/finearts1.aspx.
