LA CROSSE, Wis. – A free outdoor concert by acclaimed La Crosse musician Rob Gonzalez in Viterbo University’s Assisi Courtyard from 3:30–6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 will kick off Safe La Crosse, a community-based initiative that encourages safe and responsible behavior related to alcohol consumption.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted, and concessions will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit Safe La Crosse and Operation: River Watch.

Safe La Crosse was created by the Tri-Campus Advocacy Group with the goal of significantly reducing alcohol related injuries in the community. The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Western Technical College are planning a number of activities on their respective campuses to promote Safe La Crosse.

Pianist and singer/songwriter Rob Gonzalez will perform trendy pop music and jazz piano. He will be joined by opening performer April MacLean of Nashville, Tenn., a singer/song-writer and pianist whose lyrics encompass the themes of empowerment and healing.

“The purpose for the concert is to promote a message of safe and responsible alcohol consumption,” said Kartick Patel, president of Viterbo’s Student Government Association. “We, the students at Viterbo, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Western Technical College, are excited about starting the school year on a positive note. It’s one thing to sit back and talk about problems, it’s another to be proactive, which is what we want to do.”

“I think Concert for Safe La Crosse is a great way to kick off the Safe La Crosse initiative,” said Fred Ludwig, UW-L student body president. “Rob Gonzalez has been an invaluable asset in promoting responsible drinking throughout our community, and we are very grateful that he is donating his time and esteemed musical ability to such a worthy cause. I believe this concert will be an excellent catalyst in providing the energy necessary to get Safe La Crosse up and going.”
